Life is challenging enough for many of us. Can you imagine how tough it is being a 26 year old single mother of three children, the oldest of whom has hearing loss? Your partner has abandoned you and it’s left to you to raise your children. Your daughter is ten years old and has never been to school because of her hearing loss. She gets assessed and referred to a school for the deaf that is willing to admit her…but you don’t have the finances to pay the 2,500ksh (£19) school fees and buy the few items that she needs to be enrolled at the school.
This is the dilemma faced by one mother we came across as part of our outreach work for children with special needs. There are many children stuck (or hidden) at home and not in school because they have special needs. Our goal is to help them get assessed and access relevant education so that they can fulfill their potential.
The deadline for Lucy to enroll in school was the 10th of January but her mother just couldn’t get together all that she needed to make it happen. Our team spoke to the EARC (Education, Assessment and Resource Centre) in Murang’a South that was dealing with the case. They managed to persuade them to hold open Lucy’s place at the school while we helped her mother.
We were able to pay the school fees and buy a mattress and a few other small items that Lucy required and are happy to report that she enrolled in school yesterday!
Partnerships with local EARCs, schools, special units and Government Offices are key to our success in cases like this. We appreciate the role that each plays and the efforts they put in. Our hope is that by continuing to work together, more children can be assessed and access education just like Lucy.
As you can see, small donations can make a big difference when it comes to something like this. Donate today so that more lives can be transformed!
