Staff Development

Staff development is very important to Vision Africa. For our projects to be successful, we need to ensure that the people working at them are empowered with the knowledge and information required to help them do their best.

2011 Ends on a High for Seed of Hope

2011 has ended with good news for our Seed of Hope centres in Kitui and Kisii. They have been advised that with just a few modifications they can become registered D.I.T (Directorate of Industrial Training) test centres. Currently, Seed of Hope students sit their Grade 2 and Grade 3 dressmaking exams at external test centres. It is hoped that from 2012 they and students from other training centres will pay to sit their exams at Seed of Hope. As well as reducing transport costs for our students, this will also generate income which can help with Seed of Hope’s running costs.

Computers in Kariti

Our Seed of Hope centre in Kariti has been one of the most active Vision Africa projects in terms of initiating income generating activities (IGAs) to help towards self sustainability. Head teacher Njambi and her team have been busy thinking about the needs of the community and how they can raise funds by addressing those needs.

Meet the Mechanics

As you may have read, our Nairobi Seed of Hope Centre recently launched its first program for boys. Known as “Clayton’s Mechanics – Engineering Brighter Futures” the project has already recruited the first nine students and a teacher who will focus on vocational skills while the existing Seed of Hope staff will help students with business skills and life skills. As this new project starts out, we thought it would be interesting to share the stories and thoughts of some of the people involved.

Friends to the Rescue

What would you do if you and your family lost your home and all your belongings in a few hours due to a fire? Sadly, that is a situation that one of our Nairobi Seed of Hope students recently had to face.

Patience has just completed her first year at Seed of Hope. She lives with her sister, brother in law and their three children in Dagoretti. One evening, a child from a neighbouring house was sent inside to fetch something. As he left, he didn’t notice that the curtain had caught fire due to the flame from a nearby lamp. Kariti Seed of Hope Graduation 2011

Friday 4th November saw the celebration of the fifth graduation at our Seed of Hope centre in Kariti, Murang’a. The staff and students went all out to ensure the event was a great success and the second year students were given a good send off as they head out to set up their Roots businesses.
