Over the last few weeks, Seed of Hope Nairobi has had the pleasure of hosting an intern from Egerton University here in Kenya. Priscilla Muthoni Maina is about to commence her fourth year of studies in “Clothing textiles and interior design” but before that she is spending eight weeks helping to train the Seed of Hope students.

Our Seed of Hope centre in Kariti, Murang’a, is a great success story. Under the leadership of Headteacher Njambi, the staff and students work hard both in class and in the other activities that sustain the project. Of all the Vision Africa projects, Seed of Hope Kariti has made the biggest steps towards self-sustainability.

On Friday 4th June, the Queen’s Official Birthday was celebrated throughout the world. To mark the occasion in Nairobi, an event was held at the British High Commissioner’s Residence and Vision Africa was proud to be part of the day. The chosen theme was the sporting links between UK and Kenya and how sport can play a role in development. Thanks to our matches between the British High Commission Cheetahs and Kibera Mpira Mtaani we were invited along to promote the work of Kibera Mpira Mtaani.
Staff Training

With Seed of Hope closed for April holidays, it was time for the staff to head back to the classroom for a training session that lasted two days. The Nairobi centre played host to all the teachers who travelled from Kisii, Kitui and Kariti Seed of Hope centres for this regular event which allows an opportunity to share experiences and skills as well as receiving updates on the syllabus.

To mark International Women’s Day on the 8th of March, we’d like to bring you our latest update from Seed of Hope where we are helping young destitute girls become strong independent women.
Recruitment at Seed of Hope is drawing to a close for this year with new girls being enrolled at all four centres. Encouragingly, there was a very low drop-out rate over the Christmas holidays and our second year students are now in full swing as they prepare for their trade exams. Read the full article »
More Than 100 Girls Graduate

Stunning designs, displays of craftwork, proud teachers and happy students – November saw graduations at all four Seed of Hope centres in Kisii, Kitui, Muranga and Nairobi. Approximately 115 girls graduated this year on completion of their two year course. To mark the event, each graduate was presented with four certificates – MicroBusiness Skills, Life Skills, Vocational Skills and overall achievement.

Those who have been following our news over the past few months will be aware that Vision Africa is looking for long-term solutions to minimise the impact of the current global economic crisis while giving our projects a helping hand towards a more self-sufficient future. Having lost 35 sponsors in recent months, it is clear that we need to look for alternative ways of raising income to support our work. To that end, we have been introducing income generating activities (IGAs) at as many of our projects as possible.
