There was a definite air of excitement on the day the World Cup opened in South Africa. People in Kenya were tweeting about wearing football jerseys to work and that some offices were closing early to allow staff to go and watch the opening match.

On Friday 4th June, the Queen’s Official Birthday was celebrated throughout the world. To mark the occasion in Nairobi, an event was held at the British High Commissioner’s Residence and Vision Africa was proud to be part of the day. The chosen theme was the sporting links between UK and Kenya and how sport can play a role in development. Thanks to our matches between the British High Commission Cheetahs and Kibera Mpira Mtaani we were invited along to promote the work of Kibera Mpira Mtaani.

Despite the rain and mud, the game went well and ended in a 2-2 draw so a rematch is being scheduled for a later date.

If we could share that feeling, it would help people understand why Vision Africa does the work it does for disadvantaged children. This day saw the inaugural Kibera Schools Music Festival hosted by Kibera Mpira Mtaani*.

We often speak of the value of our football tournaments. This time round, we thought we would give the children a voice and let them tell you why they liked the Kibera Mpira Mtaani Informal Schools Tournament.
Informal Schools Finals

I have attended many Kibera Mpira Mtaani football matches and tournament finals over the past 3 years. Finals days are always busy with good crowds showing up and at least 5 matches to be played, often with lots of penalty kicks. So I thought I knew what to expect as I went along to the pitch for the finals of the Informal Schools Tournament on Friday 16th October. I was wrong.
