Report from Riruta

Last year was one of the most challenging yet for St. Johns Children’s Centre in Riruta. However, we’re happy to report that 2011 has seen a change in fortunes and headteacher, Gerald, is confident that they have turned a corner.

Since the new school year began twenty new students have registered at St. Johns. Fifteen of these are fee-paying students which will help cover the monthly running costs such as teachers’ salaries. The recruitment of the new students has been helped by some renovations that were carried out at the school over the December holidays. Read the full article »

 


Kibera Education Project Celebrates Success

In November 2010, a group of around forty students from Kibera joined their peers throughout the country and sat their KCPE exams marking the end of their time at primary school. Having studied after school at Kibera Mpira Mtaani’s resource centre with the support of the volunteer teachers, expectations were high for this group and they didn’t disappoint!

Kibera Lutheran School Update

The Lutheran school was started by church members who came together to give the big population of Kibera children a place they can call a school. Kibera being the largest slum in Sub-Saharan Africa has an estimated population of 1million people where 60% are young people and children. This population has overtaken the education facilities in the area forcing churches, organisations and donors to invest more in education by providing a place for children to learn. These schools are known as non-formal schools and Lutheran School falls under this category.

Kibera Schools Music Festival

I wish we could bottle the energy and excitement that was in the air in Kibera on the 19th February 2010. If we could share that feeling, it would help people understand why Vision Africa does the work it does for disadvantaged children. This day saw the inaugural Kibera Schools Music Festival hosted by Kibera Mpira Mtaani*.
