The year started very well with a big number of the Nyamwanga community being recruited to join school. The free primary school has brought in a lot of children who turn up to benefit from this programme.
I thank God and secondly our donor for bring us this far. The children were fed all days during school times despite the global financial crisis.
On top of the normal education for the daily routine, the school also participated in the primary school drama and music festival in the month of July.
Vision Africa sponsored their entry and bought new drums and costumes and paid for their transport to events through to provincial level where they came position six out of forty schools in Western Province.
The school’s ECD (Early Childhood Development) Unit was not left behind. They got a good donation of stationery from Vision Africa all three terms. Knowing that ECD is not paid for by the government, Vision Africa has supported this programme which helps send a good number of children to primary level. Besides that, we assist staff mainly by paying ECD teachers and the cooking staff for the whole school.
The ECD compound was fenced to keep the small kids safely away from the bigger ones when playing. This was done during the August holiday. We are looking forward to installing some play equipment during the December holiday so that the children can have more fun in school.
All the children look okay. One student who had previously gone through an eye operation in Nairobi, paid for by Vision Africa, is now doing very well in her studies. She had cataracts from a very young age and by seven years old had very limited sight. Her operation was very successful.
The drop out rate in school has really gone down. The days where we used to lose fourteen children in a year have passed. We only lost four children this year. This year there were not many pregnancy cases among the candidates (students in final year of primary school). Glory be to God and the whole community of Nyamwanga. Although we lost a student who passed away after being ill for some time, what’s worrying at the moment is the big number of children who are brought up as orphans as their parents died when they were still young, leaving them to live with their grandparents.
December is here and the children are on holiday just preparing for Christmas. Vision Africa is working very hard to prepare the new year uniforms for when they come back to school. I am looking forward to clothing 170 children for the new school year. This year we had 25 candidates and we are looking forward to them getting good results in their final exams. The school has also benefited from a government project and built a new block and renovated a number of classrooms.
