Kibera Mpira Mtaani* started out as a football project but has always had aspirations of being more involved in the local community and helping the youth of Kibera to develop their talents. After the success of the 2009 informal schools football tournament and the first year of their library seeing eighteen students pass their KCPE (Kenya Certificate of Primary Education) thanks to KMM’s after school tuition, 2010 looks set to be even bigger and better for this Community Based Organisation.
To start the year off, Kibera Mpira Mtaani is facilitating a music festival for informal schools in Kibera. In February, twenty schools will take part in the three day event which will see students perform a traditional dance and a poem based on the themes of education, life in Kibera, drugs and informal schools. Each school will include both boys and girls in their performances and they will be competing for prizes including stationery and books for their schools. Local ECD (Early Childhood Development) schools have approached Kibera Mpira Mtaani and asked to be involved in the event. With students aged between three and seven years, these schools are keen to be part of KMM’s program so it has been decided that they will be involved perhaps in a curtain raiser performance on finals day. This has also prompted KMM to consider including a “Kindergarten Tournament” in their next informal schools football event.
The music festival will involve two days of heats followed by a finals day. This final event will be judged by local celebrities along with the chairman of Vision Africa, Bob Dowty, who will be in Kenya visiting our projects in February.
