Kenya in Drought Crisis

Kenya is once again in crisis as it faces a severe drought across the country. The President has called a National Food Crisis. Food prices have trebled and is in short supply.

Our childrens home in Riandu where we planted 12 acres has lost everything. Water is rationed and the bore hole we dug has totally dried up. This means of course no harvest in February as expected. We have recently put in place two very large water tanks so that we can store water when it is turned on, but to date nothing.

Failed CropsI met with Henry from the home this week and released some extra money to purchase maize and beans. We will now have to find money to purchase new seeds and plants for the rains expected in March. The newspaper reports that in the surrounding area of the home 100,000 people face hunger and starvation.

We are just managing to keep other feeding programmes going but with great difficulty. In Nyamwanga a cabbage would normally cost about 10 shillings, but now is costing 50 shillings. Other vegetables are hard to find and so they have to constantly change the menu. This is the only meal that most of our children take in one day so we cannot let up – no matter what.

I KNOW THERE IS A REAL ECONOMIC CRISIS IN THE UK BUT WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY ‘ONE OFF’ DONATION TO HELP IN THIS SITUATION.

Of course it is the poor that suffer most every time. Thank you in anticipation.

Vera Packard.
