Web Site Information

Browser Support

Our web site has been designed to work in most popular modern browsers. It has been tested in Internet Explorer 6 and 7, Firefox 2 & 3, Safari 3 and Google Chrome, although the majority of testing has been with IE7 and FF3. If you experience a problem with the site we would really like to hear about it so that we can continually improve your browsing experience. The site is optimised to display correctly in browsers with a horizontal resolution of 1024 pixels or greater. Users with low resolution screen settings may not enjoy our site the way we intended since it requires a minimum width of 900 pixels to display the content fully without scrolling from side to side.

Javascript

We have minimised the use of Javascript and the site will be fully functional in most respects for any visitors who have disabled scripting in their browsers, or who use applications which do not support Javascript. Minor functionality will be lost, most notably the 'Search Vision Africa' function, which utilises Google Custom Search will not work. We also use javascript to obfuscate email addresses on the site to avoid harvesting by spam bots. In this case we will instead display an image of the email address if Javascript is turned off, but this will not work with screen readers and other text only browsers. In this case we recommend you visit our contact page for alternative methods of getting in touch with us. We also use javascript to present a pop up window when you press the 'donate' button on any of our project pages. With scripting disabled this will simply redirect to our giving page on the Charities Aid Foundation web site. As the site develops there may be other uses of Javascript, but we will endeavour to ensure the core site remains fully functional when it is disabled.

Compliance to standards

We have coded our web pages to validate as xhtml1.0 strict or xhtml1.0 transitional wherever possible. Any exceptions are where we rely on third party code, such as our image gallery (gallery 2) and our newsletter mailing list system, so we cannot guarantee that these will validate. We have also used valid CSS2.1 throughout the site.

Valid XHTML 1.0 StrictValid CSS!

To check any of our pages for compliance just visit http://validator.w3.org and put a page address into the form to view the result.

Accessibility

We have used high contrast throughout the site and all images have 'alt' tags as recommended. We also provide an option to choose a larger font to view our site, although some page layout works a little less well in large font mode. In addition we provide a site map and a site search function to aid navigation.

Icon to indicate a new page opens when link is clicked. Wherever you see this image it indicates that the link that is next to it opens a new window when clicked. We don't want you to be surprised when the window opens. We also indicate the same by naming the link appropriately and you will see this when you hover your mouse over the link.

Please report any problems with accessibility to us so that we can try to address them. But... we do ask you to bear in mind that we operate a low cost model and to keep our overheads low we have not used a professional web design company to put our site together. What you see here is the result of our Chairman doing the best he can in his spare time, so don't be too hard on us if you have trouble with the site!!
